Wave Against More Taxes Sweeps East Africa

29-June-2024 Kenya's President William Ruto, bowing to pressure from an angry public, rejected the contentious Finance Bill 2024 in its entirety and called for austerity measures to compensate for the potential revenue shortfall in his Ksh3.99 trillion ($30.93 billion) budget for the 2024/2025 fiscal year. The decision came in the crescendo of a public outrage over high taxation. The Parliamentary Committee on Finance had put the amount to be raised from the taxation measures contained in the bill at Ksh302 billion ($2.34 billion). The withdrawal of the proposed revenue law came even after the government announced on June 18 the shelving of several new taxes and suspension of others costing the exchequer an estimated Ksh200 billion ($1.55 billion). President Mohamud: We will not compromise Somalia’s territorial integrity and its unity

29-June-2024 犀利士 Somalia's President Sheikh Hassan Mohamud spoke to NMG correspondent Jackson Mutinda, warning that Ethiopia, which signed an MoU with breakaway Somaliland on use of its port, will not be allowed to set up a military base there. One is liberating this country from terrorists. As I said in my campaign, a Somalia at peace with itself, and at peace with the rest of the world. The other is a democratic Somalia. Let's talk about Somaliland and the deal with Ethiopia. It doesn't seem to go away, what are the issues? There is no issue. But, unfortunately, the Horn of Africa has always been a very difficult region. The Horn of Africa is a gateway to many parts of the world, and also a strategic region that controls many aspects of the world economy....

President Joe Biden and Donald Trump have squared off in the first debate of the 2024 United States presidential race, seeking to pull ahead in a match-up that has, so far, been in a dead heat. But despite delivering the opening salvo in Thursday’s event, Biden struggled to articulate his points at several moments, appearing to fumble for his words Meanwhile, Trump took the opportunity to redirect the conversation at several points to Biden’s perceived weaknesses, drumming up fears about immigration and the state of the economy. He also attempted to dodge questions about whether he would honour the results of November 5’s presidential elec...

Armed conflicts hit post-WWII record in 2023

10-June-2024 More armed conflicts took place in 2023 than in any other year since the end of World War II, a new study has found. The Peace Research Institute of Oslo (PRIO) said 59 armed conflicts took place worldwide last year, led by the wars in Ukraine and Gaza Twenty-eight of the conflicts were in Africa, followed by Asia with 17 and the Middle East with 10. Just three conflicts were recorded in Europe and a single example in the Americas. Although the number of conflicts grew last year, the number of countries that experienced conflicts declined from 39 in 2022 to 34. The increase in the number of conflicts can partially be attributed to the spread of ISIL (ISIS) across Asia and the Middle East and the involvement in general of a growing number of non-state actors....

Norway clarifies role in Kenya-Somalia maritime border dispute

6-June-2024" Norway says it never interfered with a legal challenge mounted by Somalia against Kenya over a maritime boundary dispute. Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide, while speaking generally of the Kenya-Norway ties, used the occasion to clarify his country’s role when Kenya and Somalia fought at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) over the Indian Ocean border. The case was decided in October 2021, favouring largely, Somalia’s arguments that there had been no definitive maritime boundary between the two countries. The court ordered a re-demarcation of that boundary, drawing a line between the two sides’ contested flow of the boundary.
