Somalia’s international partners hail the completion of the constitution

 Somalia’s international partners* commend the efforts of the Federal Government of Somalia and the Federal Parliament to ensure Somalia’s compliance with international and regional human rights obligations, including the rights of the child.

“We look forward to future cooperation with Somalia as it consolidates its role in the international arena,” they added.

The partners said: We further acknowledge the firm intention of the Federal Government of Somalia to make progress on finalizing the Constitution and urge all stakeholders to redouble their efforts to build consensus through an inclusive process.

Somali president signs the official copy of the amendments to chapters of the constitution

Following approval by the Parliament, Somalia’s President, Hassan Sheikh, signed the modified first four chapters of the Constitution into law.

This milestone, according to the president and other officials in the government is an important step toward Somalia’s democracy, equality, and better government institutions.

Somali Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre stated that the completion of the constitution is beneficial to all Somalis and that working on the constitution is one of his government’s top priorities.

Former presidents, prime ministers, and several MPs have all expressed their opposition to the new constitution, claiming that it will lead to Somalia’s fragmentation.

Puntland state severed ties with the government and says it will act like an independent government until its concerns in the constitutional review process are resolved.
